Upcoming Site Downtime Likely

I just wanted to give everyone a heads-up that there'll likely be some extended downtime within the next week or two. I'm still not 100% on this yet, but I'm pretty sure that I'll be switching from a Windows-based server to a UNIX-based server. I've plan on getting segazene.com up and running within the next couple of weeks, and I have a feeling that it'll be wiser to make the transition to a UNIX-based server sooner rather than later, since managing file permissions (among other things) is just a bitch on Windows-based servers.

So, what does this mean for you? Well, hopefully, just a bit of downtime. And, by a bit, I mean possibly days of downtime. It depends on how smoothly everything goes. I'm telling you ahead of time because I'd like to discourage you guys from doing much of anything as far as adding new posts (especially in the restricted forums), since there's always that tiny chance that something might get lost in the transition. I'll do a database backup immediately prior to requesting that MochaHost (my Web host) make the transition, so I shouldn't lose any content. I'm also attempting to devise a means of easily backing up and restoring my files.

The overall site structure isn't changing, and FluxBB runs just fine on UNIX-based servers. My plans for segazene.com are a bit more ambitious, however, and I need everything to go really smoothly due to the sheer amount of content that it'll likely come to offer in the future. Unlike kevinski.com, segazene.com will allow for anyone to submit news and other content that'll be able to make its way to the front page, and it'll allow for much more interaction, as well.

If you happen to have any questions, then now's the time to ask. tongue

No, but seriously please make sure all the restricted forums are kept that way! Should I take down my .exes just in case? :p

Well, the database that I'll be backing up will have all of the relevant forum posts and settings stored within it, so we shouldn't hafta worry about security mistakes. I'll be backing up all of the site files separately, including images that I've uploaded and attached to forum posts, as well as highly important things like the Pistachio theme. I'd honestly like to eventually make this site into something more, but I don't know of anything that'd make such a change completely painless. (Sadly, FluxBB doesn't appear to be popular enough to warrant anyone making a converter to allow for easy migration from one software package to another.)

The other site will allow pretty much every user to contribute content, and it'll allow all users to rate content (kinda like digg does), among other things. Plus, unlike FluxBB, I'll be able to add a lot of functionality (in the form of modules) without having to edit a lot of code within the base installation. I also plan on making the other site very mobile-friendly, with there being special templates for Web users, as well as RSS feeds and integration with social networking sites.

Oh man, see stuff like what you just said is why my website sucks hahaha. I just don't have the patience for crap like that (even though I have the patience for programming, weird huh?)

And we need more color themes too! I'll still use pistachio, but I'm sure some others might want other nauseating creations you can come up with! big_smile

Oh, don't get me wrong: I'm not programming it from scratch of anything. I'm planning on using software that'll do much of the work for me. I'm sure that I'll need to put a bit of money into some of the modules, but it'll be worth it to see one of my sites really, REALLY take off in terms of community size. My only real problem with it is that it's probably gonna make good ol' kevinski.com seem boring in comparison. (Really, kevinski.com's boring most of the time, anyway, but it has its moments.)

In fact, the only thing keeping me from taking the same approach with kevinski.com is how little I'd look forward to transitioning content from one software package to another. And I'm sure that you guys don't wanna start completely from scratch again or spend a lot of time copying old forum posts over. To be honest, though, kevinski.com does have the advantage of covering just about anything in existence, whereas I have a feeling that I'll be painting myself into a corner with segazene.com (since it'll be focused on Sega).

I suppose that I could put some general forums in place on segazene.com and gradually transition everyone over to the new site, though. News and whatnot will need to be centered around Sega, but that doesn't mean that the forums can't serve the same purpose that they do on kevinski.com. I think that I'll reserve that transition for when you start your next project. I dunno if I can hold out until H2's done in that respect. Trust me when I say that you won't even feel like using kevinski.com once I finally unleash the new site, especially with your speedier Internet service. That might make everyone more enthusiastic about the inevitable transition. I'm thinking that kevinski.com might eventually just become a personal blog at some point. After all, who aside from those who know me associates kevinski with games?

As I've stated before, you haven't yet experienced my true power. I'm thinking that Pistachio has to make the leap to segazene.com, although I'll need to include some color schemes that're much more relevant to Sega characters and consoles. And I can't wait to have the first Sega Web site that openly bans overly-enthusiastic Sonic fans. XD

If for no other reason, I'd join just for that one.

Also, I agree some new schemes would be good for new people. I'll probably still use pistachio too though since it's finally stopped making my retinas burn. I'd rather not go through all the temporary blindness again to get used to different schemes. XD

Good luck moving servers and with the new site though.

Yeah, as much as people may initially hate Pistachio, I think that it slowly grows on them. What I love about Pistachio is that it's such a departure from a lot of other sites. I hate going to site after site, with all of them being the same old color schemes. Pistachio is an escape.
