The above link speaks for itself. You just HAVE to watch it, and I refuse to discus the content in the vid until at least some of you have seen it.

Hmmm...
The ghouls n' ghosts and CV graphics ALMOST fit perfectly. Almost. The boss fight at the end was pretty awesome though. All the blood and junk coming out of it when Richter hits it was cool. But what's up with the Chun Li style finishing move?? That was unexpected.

It's kinda cool what can be done with OpenBOR, although I've never really seen any mod made with the BoR engine top BoR, itself. Honestly, this doesn't play enough like a Castlevania game to interest me. It's far too forgiving as far as the collision detection goes, and the level design is uninspired at best.

Re: Help me find out more!!!!
Wow, and here I thought you would be chomping at the bit to see if Del Duio could somehow incorporate something similar into his projects. Side-scrolling beatemup's and schmup's have always, to me at least, most properly showcased the point of videogaming. Why else does one play a game besides to escape their own reality and try to become the best in some alternate universe? Sure, there are games made purely to be competetive based on skill (think HALO and CoD:MW2), there are games made for eliteists to spend more real money in the virtual world (social crap on facebook), there are games made to bring people together for short bursts of time (mario party comes to mind), and there there are games made just to be fun.
I personally think much could be done with CV as an 'arcade style' side-scroller. If you think about it though, wasn't that how konami started the franchise? It has taken many twists turns and facelifts to get where we are now and have words like 'metroidvania' being casually tossed around. Hell, isn't there some kind of special arcade cabinet where it plays like the old house of the dead games? And isn't that supposed to be the new stuff?
Who here has ever played the simpsons arcade game? How about the old x-men cabinet? Now, imagine if you will having some of the biggest names in castlevania teaming up together, all playable by different people at the same time, and having it play like those games. IIRC, they were considered to be some of the best at what they did in arcades all over the world. Sure, I really enjoy games like virtual-on, games where the machine is just a fictitious extention of yourself and how you do things. But what I am talking about here is prolly one of the best ideas I have had in a long time, and I filter a lot of random BS through this tiny little head of mine. Maybe some day I will share with you guys, but for now you will just have to take my word for it.
Bottoms line: if I find it to be fun I will play it, if not I go elsewhere. I want to share my gaming bliss with others. If I can potentially improve on something, or better yet make my own something for others to enjoy and tinker with, then I'm happy.

Re: Help me find out more!!!!
I've played The Simpsons in arcades. Good stuff. Thing is, I don't expect a multi-player Castlevania experience to be an arcade experience. Why? Well, I, personally, cannot imagine a classic-style Castlevania game playing well with four-player multi-player. I can, however, imagine a Metroidvania playing well with four-player multi-player. Why? Because precise platforming isn't nearly as common in them, plus RPG elements just tend to make the multi-player element for important, since it's much easier to incorporate and enforce class weaknesses into RPG's (in my opinion).
Thing is, the level design in the game that we're discussing here is simply bland. I realize that Metroidvanias aren't known for their breakthrough level design (although it has gotten better over time), they're still far beyond anything that I've seen in this video. Plus, the fact that it's built on an engine that was originally intended for beat-em-ups just doesn't set well with me. I have a feeling that it wouldn't actually play very similarly to a Castlevania, and what I've seen from the video confirms that.
I'd like to see Castlevania enter the multi-player realm with selectable classes, which would affect where you could go in the game in different ways. For instance, certain paths may just be more melee-friendly, discouraging parties who rely heavily on magic from traveling them. Alternately, magical seals could prevent melee-only characters from passing, forcing them to take less appealing paths.
The reason that I don't expect (or want) a multi-player Castlevania game to feature more than four playable characters is because a Castlevania game should always have depth to it (which is why I prefer Metroidvanias), yet it should always be easy to pick up and play (so the controls should be very simple). I think that item and spell management would need to be very accessible in real-time, so it'd make sense to limit the number of players to make it possible for items and spells to target specific characters based on either 1) a one-button-per-character approach or 2) a toggle approach that doesn't take too long to utilize.

How can anyone mention the Simpsons game without mentioning the game that it's basically a clone of? TMNT arcade, man! That game was the shit ![]()

You can? I'd think that'd be a statistical nightmare. RPG, yes. Metroidvania where you can go most anywhere, multiple pathways, various key items / abilites? Sounds very difficult but you should make it!!

Re: Help me find out more!!!!
A four-player multiplayer metroidvania exists, and it's called "Kirby And The Amazing Mirror". Though it doesn't have any RPG stats.
There's also two Dungeons & Dragons beat'em ups, which had various players classes and multiple paths and such...
So, yeah. '_'

Ah, D&D wasn't a metroidvania. It was more like Rondo of Blood.

Yeah, I can imagine it working very well, especially since a game like that would rely far less on the traditional relics that make any given character type able to double jump, fly around and high jump. It'd require teamwork to see certain areas. I don't foresee myself ever being able to make something along those lines, though. Don't get me wrong: I have some pretty cool ideas for a Castlevania-style game, but I'm certainly willing to set realistic goals for it. XD

The D&D games that I'm thinking of were beat-em-ups, so they weren't anything even remotely close to Castlevania. They're definitely great games, though. I've always wanted to buy the Saturn versions, especially since I have a RAM expansion cart now. ![]()

If you could get the teamwork part down, how about having it so your guys can pick each other up in a stack like a ladder? Then the guy who makes it at the top could lower a rope down and the other guys could climb up?
Sounds hard to do, but it'd be pretty cool.

Well, given that melee characters would likely be the most mobile, I doubt that it'd be necessary for players to pick one another up. I'd prefer that the whip flail just be used to lower the whip as a rope or something.
