Let's discuss Shining Force
Okay, I had started out with the intent to have a discussion, but then I started getting all technical and after about 30 minutes I had a very detailed breakdown of how the games work. That's not what I was trying to do. I started over. Here we are.
I really enjoy the series for the (usually) balanced turn based strategy even though the stories are cliche and they play pretty much identical to the other games in the series. The music is awesome though, but I can't get the music to run on my ISO for some reason. Oh well.
Please discuss before I start rambling about the technical points again ![]()

Re: Let's discuss Shining Force
The only Shining Force game that I have is for GBA. Honestly, while I recognize the Shining Force games as very solid, I can't say that I like them nearly as much as the Fire Emblem games. Honestly, though, I'd hafta say that Shining Force was always better in terms of storyline. Plus, Fire Emblem just seems to play it very safe with new installments, doing very little to surprise players.

Yeah, Shining Force: Resurrection of the Dark Dragon. I believe that it's a remake of the original.

Re: Let's discuss Shining Force
Oh. Well, if that's all it is then I see no reason not to stick with the original that works on a screen twenty times larger. That's why I picked SFCD over Sword of Haijya or however it's spelled. What I REALLY want to do is get a working copy of SF3 for saturn. I once owned a saturn, but the guy that sold it to me didn't tell me it didn't work.

You know, as much as I love Sega, I must say that Saturn is a complete fucking piece of shit compared to other Sega hardware. Seriously, it's so damn unreliable, and it's got a weak-ass video signal. Don't get me wrong: I love Saturn to death, but damn...I wish that its reliability was better.

I think it's a remake of Shining Force 2 isn't it? The original is called Shining in the Darkness and is a completely different game. It's played in the 1st person perspective like a Wizardry game. It's really fun but nothing like the other SF games I've played. I've tried SitD and SF2 way back on the Genesis and both were cool.
Honestly though even the first Fire Emblem game I have for the GBA blows it away though. That game's so fun.

Re: Let's discuss Shining Force
Yeah, SitD was the first of the Shining series, but there was a first Shining Force too. SitD was loads of fun I though, and I got to play it back in the day before internets and FAQs and whatnot. I played through on trial and error alone, and a heavy dose of grinding.
Years later, I gotta wonder how Fire Emblem is still going and Shining Force isn't. They both have such asimple formula with little deviation, but if a new SF and a new FE were released on the same day and I could choose either to play I would pick SF.

Re: Let's discuss Shining Force
There's Shining Wisdom for Saturn, as well, which plays kinda like a Zelda game, I believe. But yeah, in either case, there was an original Shining Force game, and the GBA game is a remake of it. As for why Fire Emblem is still going strong, I'd say that it's interesting that Fire Emblem really only came into the picture in the U.S. after Shining Force kinda went away. Perhaps that has something to do with it? Maybe Nintendo realized that there was a market to pick up on.

Re: Let's discuss Shining Force
There's something about making your units have permanent death that adds a lot to the FE game I have at least. I've been trying to get through Eliwood's normal campaign (on and off, for years lol) and whenever somebody dies I restart the battle.
I bought it brand new in 2003 and the other day I wondered when the battery would shit the bed
I remember when my copy of GBC Dragon Warrior 3 died on me... after about 7 straight months or so of playing it. Oh man that pissed me off.

Ah, I'm the same way. Granted, I make the mistake of trying to level everyone evenly, so I try using my lowest-level characters in each battle. It works out most of the time, but I tend to get a bit too ballsy in some of the more wide-open areas. I restart if someone dies. Fuck that.
By the way, I love battles in which there's a character who can't get killed off because of the plot. I'll just leave everyone else at the beginning and take that one character to slaughter everyone. XD
